THAT FIRST HILL

THAT FIRST HILL

A Poem by Rene Velez

THAT FIRST HILL

She walked over the hill
like a new dawn, perspiration
on her brow like morning dew,
smiling and speaking few words,
she would persist,
her visible cold breath
blowing like mountain mist,

we had it planned,
an Autumn hike like children
we would explore
through the the creators canopy,
trampling on his painted
forest floor,

above the hills aiming forward
among the cliffs to a heavenly view
where thoughts are lost
and the old soul is renewed

but for me the greatest view
will be of the morning chill
and her hand accompanying mine
over that first hill.
