Make a clean sweepA Poem by Rémi RubenI’ve unlearned, being someone else’s puppetMake a clean sweep, of all I’ve kept, under the carpet Common-sense to have, my own parents as confidants I thought I could count, on my sisters as well-wishers I wonder why, my brothers wouldn’t bother much more A third of my life, to catch on this catch-twenty-two Willy-nilly family members, not always friends
Make a clean sweep, at my own sweet will I’ve unlearned, being someone else’s puppet I’ve learned to modestly blow, my own trumpet
Without a friend in the world, with no one to turn to I always wanted a sweetheart, I could look up to My nearest and dearest, press the flesh, my own lifeblood Narcissistic ego trip, eager for the crowd to roar My life has so far been, a flying roller coaster Stick my neck out, without lies, footloose and fancy-free
Make a clean sweep, at my own sweet will I’ve unlearned, being someone else’s puppet I’ve learned to modestly blow, my own trumpet
I seldom have arguments with myself, turned up trumps Don’t incline me, to think that I’m in my right mind Life promise, plugged into the socket, of my birthright Unconscious brainchild, acting ego-conscientiously Before a blind spellbinder, makes me kick the bucket A super-duper CV, I’ll have in my pocket
