For Mike

For Mike

A Poem by Roberta Weth
"

Restored: a tribute to my old childhood friend who died that year.

"

For Mike

A thirteen year old sun shines

On the peeling red paint

Of an old trailer

Long gone from the playground

Two  boys laugh

At a stubborn girl

With blonde hair in her eyes

Hands on hips,

Chins stuck out

A far from forgotten quarrel resounds

“I don’t want to be April! I want to be Leonardo”

The two boys look at each other

And laugh

The brown haired boy chimes

“You’re a girl! Girls can’t be ninja turtles!”

The girl stomps her feet

And the blonde boy says

“Besides if you aren’t April who are we going to save?”

The girl thinks and then laughs

“Ok then which one of you is going to be Michelangelo?”

The boys look at each other again

“I will” They shout in unison

The little girl giggles

“Here we go…”
