The Book of Rules

The Book of Rules

A Poem by Reese

My mother always told me
There are monsters in the night.
But the real monsters I've figured
Are the ones who hide in plain sight

They carry a book with them
The 'Book of Rules' it's called
Society doesn't see it
How this book is deeply flawed

"Don't ask questions, don't bend rules;
Beauty and grace those are your tools"

They'll tell you what is right, what they consider fair
The questions you're allowed to ask
The ones you wouldn't dare

They tell me I can love anyone
Just as long as they approve.
That I can have my secrets,
But they should know them too

They expect me to follow these rules
Like others have before me
But I was born to be wild
Im not like them you see

You still think you can cage me
And I'd like to see you try
Your eyes can't see my wings
But I've taught myself to fly

And if I fall I'll pick up the pieces
My hopes and dreams too
Pack them up in a suitcase
Take them someplace new.

I'll create my own path
Find happiness along the way
Leave my sparkle along the road
In case I go astray

And if you happen to find someone
You think has lost her way
Give her the Book of Rules
Tell her to break one rule each day.

OMG this speaks and rings on so many levels! Your musicality (namely in Stanza 5 Line 1 and Last Stanza Line 4) is a bit wonky, but that is nothing compared to the grand relatable message, and the killer ending. WOW! Marvellously written! Well done! (much surprised the Writer's Café community hasn't yet eaten this up).
