the heat's making us crazy

the heat's making us crazy

A Poem by J. Randall Dodd

outside--

there are sprays of fireweed

& dandelion

turning black

in the heat of the sun,

the bees are busy

pollinating

& beating their heads

against automobile

windshields over & …

(over-

worked like chinese laborers,

they seem to prefer

suicide)

inside--

i’m sitting at the bar

taking a drag from

a pall mall cigarette,

savoring my miller lite,

& feigning interest

in the inebriated

ramblings of an alcoholic

meth addict

whose teeth,

seeing that death was imminent,

decided to

make the jump

long ago
