Talking to Angels

Talking to Angels

A Poem by Tim Lawless

I could move a mountain with my faith.

I speak in tongues that cause the earth to shake.

I've conversed with angels, I know their very thoughts,

Though I feel further now from everything I've sought.

I am dischord, symply empty noise,

I know all there is to know but my heart is a void.

I'll give away everything I own,

And still be no closer to what I seek to know.

I would give up my life and surrender to fire,

And gain no ground toward what I desire.

My righteousness is still so many filthy rags,

Because what I've gained pales compared to what I don't have.

Without love, I do not know Him.

Without love, I can not see His face.

If I don't share the love He has for me,

Can I honestly say I deserve His grace.

I am Nothing without love.

And Oh God! You're so far above.

This least of all can I hide from you!

What I know is true is never what I do!

"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing."

Interesting piece. Almost a translation, a poetic translation of Paul's admonitions to the residents of Corinth. We see folks toss the word around so freely these days, but it seems obvious that they know not of what they speak.

Here's hoping that the message gets through.

I think the rhyming is somewhat limiting-- it sets the flow a little off, at least, at the beginning. I'm not going to lie and say that I managed to get all the way through this-- and perhaps later I will work harder to take the time and read it-- maybe then my review will change, but for now I'll say this:

The description is wonderful, and the imagery is amazing-- but the flow is set off by your restricting yourself entirely to a certain rhyming format.

This is really amazing!

Especially the way that the meter and words just flow!

It kinda sounds like a song to me....?
