“Dominic!” I yelled “Close the f*****g door!” He rushed in only to trip on some boards that had been left out. Luckily for him there were no nails in them. At that very moment three of them hobbled inside. My first shot from my 9mm went right between the eyes of one. The second received many shots to the chest and fell on top of Dominic. As I pointed my gun at the third one I heard my gun click; I ran out of bullets. I dropped the clip and replaced it with another. By that time I was to late. Dominic had pushed the dead body off of him only to receive another. It fell on him, biting his arm. He let out a burst of pain and rage. He punched the side of its head and it let go of him. He pushed it off of him and got up to close the door before anymore came in. The thing from before got up on its feet and slowly moved towards Dominic while he was boarding up the door, unaware of what was going on behind him. I held up my gun and pulled the trigger. The bullet went through its head. It fell to its knees and then its face. Dominic looked at the bullet hole that went through the house next to his head, about 2 inches to be exact. He looked at me in shock. I had a small smile on my face. “That was fun” I said jokingly. “Steve,” he began “the next time your going to take a shot that close to me tell me to duck or something.” “Are you ok?” I asked him. “I’m fine, but I got bit. I… I think I’m infected….” There was a long silent pause. After a minute we couldn’t help but burst out laughing.” “Its so funny yet people think its true.” he went on. “About being bit and you turn into one of them?” “Ya, a zombie.” “I’m not sure if I would call them zombies.” I said. He walked over to me. “They look and smell like s**t and they have the munches for people. That’s what I would call a zombie.” “Look,” I said “lets find that file and the guy to find out what they really are. I was told he‘s in the church up the street.” He laughed and started to shake his head. “You call that a church? Its more like a little cabin.” “Whatever,” I said “Do you know where we are?” We were in some persons house that had apparently left due to the dinning room table being flipped over and all the broken windows. Dominic walked up the stairs of the house to make sure that there was nobody or nothing left in the house. I walked into the kitchen and I checked the refrigerator. There was nothing but sliced cheese. Out of nowhere I heard panicking. I ran upstairs to find out what was wrong. I entered the room to find him crouched over next to a girl. She couldn’t be older than 18 years old. I noticed she had a bite on her leg. She was shaking pretty bad. It looked like Dominic was trying to calm her down. He kept telling her that she was going to be fine. She wouldn’t listen. “I’m going to die…” she murmured to herself. “No your not.” Dominic told her “Your just shaken up.” “Don’t lie to me.” she told him “I’ve been bitten” Dominic showed her his arm. She got quite. She looked at her leg “But…” “Listen,” he said “I’ve been bitten countless times along with my friend over here and were still not eating people.” She said nothing. Before we could say more we heard more of them trying to break in downstairs. Dominic grabbed and cocked his shotgun. I checked my handgun clips; I was on my last one. Before I could warn Dominic of my condition, he bolted out the bedroom door. I told the girl to stay put and I closed the door behind me. Dominic had already started without me. He was shooting out a broken window and seemed to be holding his own ground very well. I heard the back door in the kitchen slam open. I ran in to find two of them walking towards me. I fired 3 shots into the neck of one of them. Blood oozed out and it died. The second one was right next to me now. I put my gun up to its head and shot. Some chunks of its brain went flying out the back of its skull as it fell over backwards. I ran to close the door. Right as the door was almost shut a hand from one of them was stuck in the door I was trying to close. With all my strength, I pushed the door closed. Its hand popped off and fell on the kitchen floor. I ran in to the living room were I last saw Dominic. He was now busy reloading his shotgun, shoving the bucks in as quick as he could. They were trying to come in through the window. One of them fell into the house with broken glass in its side. I aimed to shoot, but I was grabbed from behind. Apparently one of them had gotten in from the windows behind us Dominic shot the one on the ground and the pointed over to me. He couldn’t shoot since I was in the way. The thing was biting my shoulder. I put my hands behind me, grabbed it, and threw it over my me. Dominic shot it while it was on the ground. As I turned, I saw four of them right next to me. “Duck!” Dominic yelled. I jumped to the floor and covered my head. I heard 5 shots from his shotgun go off. I got back on my feet to see one remaining zombie. Dominic had ran out of bullets and proceeded to reload again. I fired the remaining shots into it. I thought after 8 bullets to the stomach something like that would die. Somehow it was still alive. I turned my handgun around and hit it with the butt of my gun. I had hit it so hard in the head I heard its skull crack and it died. Dominic had finally reloaded when he realized that the wave of them was over. We headed upstairs to find the girl as she was before, freaking out. I comforted her while he was looking around the room. She was having a hard time speaking due to her shaking madly. Dominic crouched next to her. “Are you ok?” he asked her. “Y-y-yes, I t-think s-so.” “Can I ask you something? Where are you parents?” She looked down at the floor. “They’re…dead.” We weren’t sure what to say to her at that point. She had see her parents eaten alive. “Dominic,” I said “I’m out of ammo, do you have and extra gun I could use?” “Sorry,” he said “I only have my shotgun.” He looked at the girl who was still a little in shock. “Ma’am” he said “did your parents have any fire arms?” It didn’t take her long to come back with a briefcase. She set it next to me and laid it down. She unlatched it and opened it to show is containments. In it was a 44 magnum that laid on a mountain of bullets. The whole case was filled with bullets. It was probably around 200, maybe 400 small 44 bullets. “Is this going to work for you?” she asked like I would be disappointed. “Work for me?” I choked “This is amazing!” Dominic looked out her bedroom window. He was scanning for more of them. “We need to cross the street soon before we get another wave of these guys.” “Wave?” I asked him “That’s what I call it. They always seem to come in short bursts and then they stop for a little while.” “Whatever you say, Dominic.” “Shut up, Steve” he joked. “Come on, lets go to the church.” I looked at the girl. “What about her?” “She can ether come with us or she can stay here; its her call.” Of course, she came with us. We ran up the street as fast as we could. The church was in our sight. The girl was having a hard time running with us. I held her hand and tugged her alone with us. I think she was calming down. Dominic had his shotgun resting on his shoulder as he ran with his elbow up. He sort of looked like a bad-a*s. I had my briefcase with my magnum in the other free hand. Unfortunately, the girl only had a baseball bat with her for protection. The church was very small and had a flat roof. The doors we wide open. We ran inside to find him crouched over at the alter. We closed the doors and we moved a pew upfront of it. The church had nobody in it except him. He kept on praying to god. Dominic and I slowly approached him. The girl stayed behind us. Dominic spoke. “Are your John Hue?” The man got up and slightly turned to face up. He said nothing. He only smiled like a madman. “Sir?” he fully faced us. I noticed he was holding a handgun, identical to mine. “Sir, are you alright?” “Alright?” he replied “Salvation, my boy, is upon us! This is our rapture! We are going to be saved!” We were silent and continued to listen to him. “The Lord is coming to punish the unholy!” “Unholy!?” The girl screamed “Those people out there my not be perfect, but god wouldn’t send mindless bags of meat to go and kill them!” John shook his head in anger. “Maybe if you went to church more you would understand God! God punishes those who don’t worship him!” “Hey,” Dominic butted in “I may of not went to Sunday school, but I know that what you just said is total bullshit!” “Look at you.” John said “You are all in pain and broken down. I am perfectly in tact. God helps those who praise him!” “God helps those who help themselves.” she said. John raised his gun. Dominic and I pointed our guns at him. “Look,” I panicked “We just need you to come with us!” He unexpectedly put the gun to his head. Dominic’s eyes opened wide. “I’m going home to Jesus!” John yelled. “John, NO!” I yelled. A bullet ripped through his old, fragile skull. Blooded poured out of his head. He fell on his butt. He still had a huge smile on his face. His body laid there with his gun next to him along with the file we were looking for. He took his own life like a fool. The girl had to turn her head; it was just to much for her. I grabbed the handgun and dropped the clip to see how much ammo was left. It was empty. “He planned to kill himself.” I said silently. “What?” Dominic exclaimed “Why would he-” “I don’t know, but he was the only person who knew what they were.” “We already know what they are, Steve. Lets just get the file and get the hell out of here. I’ll alert Ken.” “Ken?” he said “Ken, can you here me?” There was the sound of fuzz. “I here you loud and clear.” he said “Did you get, John?” “No, he shot himself.” “Damn, our bosses are going to be pissed. Ok, are you both in the church?” “Yes, but we picked up a girl on the way, so could you pick her up as well in your helicopter?” “Sure beans. I’m on my way. I’ll be here in 10 minutes.” Dominic put the radio back on his side. The girl still couldn’t look at the dead body that laid before us all. I put the man’s gun away along with my other handgun. The two handguns rested inside my jacket. The air suddenly felt cold. I heard screaming from un-human voices that shrieked into our ears. Dominic looked at me. “Get ready, cause we’re going to have to stay alive.” I laid the briefcase on the ground and popped it open. I took out the magnum, loaded it as fast as I could, and grabbed a handful of little magnum bullets and stuffed them in my gray cargo pants. I put the file in the briefcase with the mound of bullets and closed it shut. I handed it to the girl. “Here,” I told her “You think you can carry this?” She nodded. Dominic crammed shotgun shells in his gun swiftly as the sound of screaming grew louder and louder. We began to hear pounding on the church doors. The girl ran upstairs to the roof, which led straight up to it, and left her bat on the ground next to the alter. “Hey, Steve,” Dominic said to me “remember when I said I hated small towns.” “Yeah.” At that very moment the church door busted down and the pew holding in flew out of the way. “This is why.” he finished. Dominic and I unloaded fire like it was the forth of July. There were eight of them at that moment, tripping over to us. I shot for the head. Out of six shots I killed four. Dominic shot three of them as if he wasn’t even trying. The last zombie came over to him, slowly walking. He put the barrel of the shotgun in its mouth and blew it away. Its body fell over on his feet. As he kicked it off of him, nine more of them came following in the church. I shot precisely at each one. I killed six with six shots. Dominic fired and killed the rest. He put his shotgun on his back as if he was giving up. I realized he ran out of bullets. He took out his survival knife. I too had ran out of bullets. My pocket was empty. I quickly grabbed the bat from before. As I got up from the ground, I noticed there was at least 20 of them. It was pure insanity. “Dominic,” I said “looks like were fighting like they did in the good old days.” “I guess we are, Steve.” Without warning, Dominic ran up to one and swung. He sliced its head off with one strong swipe. I ran up to one and smashed its head opened. One of the zombies grabbed him, but he stabbed it before it could bite him. I kicked one to the ground and hit it many times until it died. I was grabbed from behind. I screamed for help. Dominic stabbed the zombie and pulled me out of the way of many more coming my direction. I proceeded to kill them as did Dominic. Without realizing it, we had killed them all. Before we could celebrate, more of them showed up. With a sigh of annoyance, we continued our onslaught. Blood was flying everywhere. I got some in my eye and all over my clothes. We finally couldn’t take it anymore. We ran for the stairs to the roof. Our feet were getting tired from all the running. As we reached the roof, we saw the girl and Ken sitting inside the helicopter. We were right on time. Dominic and I jumped into the helicopter. We flew off into the distance leaving behind all the zombie’s. The girl had the briefcase with her still. Dominic and I smiled at each other. We saved a life, got the file, and we were getting paid. Little did we know, we had a lot more to do…. © 2010 RedAuthor's Note
