Paradise

Paradise

A Poem by Rebecca

Tell him this is the paradise he will never know
This is the garden covered in snow
Tell him I have every fleeting thing
That will make him alive, that will make him king
I will give him all he could ever want or need
He is pulling hard on my strings that lead
To a frozen heart cast astray
Yet he feels a thumping of blood from 100 feet away
He knows everyone was wrong
My heart's not in decay
It's sealed with ice but not for good
The spring will come
And she will be understood
He pulls on the line till I'm a fish out of water
He says, "finally I caught her"
And wide-eyed he watched as my heart melt,
Bloody on the boat, the ground where he knelt
He saw me as me, stronger
Not just any man's daughter
He listened to every word as it poured out
And heard every low whisper as a shout
Saw my soul in my words and my eyes
Caged butterflies
Kept where they couldn’t be hurt
But maybe that’s even worse
It's a curse
Keeping them locked in
Under the ice and under the snow
I told him this is the paradise inside
He said I had to let it go
But isn't it better to be my own prisoner
Instead of my foe's?
And he said no
Be mine
Tied my heart back together with twine
And even though it's broken
It shines
