A letter to a soldier

A letter written from the heart.

I am writing you this letter, even though I know you may never read it. 

I must be clear in my intentions. I'm not writing you another letter complaining about something or other of little importance, nor to laugh at you for something or even to reminisce about the happy times we've had which are now passed. I need you to know that in you, I find a second self, someone so like me in so many ways, someone I can look to in times of need, not even stopping to ask whether you might understand, knowing without any doubt that you will. 

It pains me so much to have to write you this, I can barely stand it. knowing that I'll never again have my best friend by my side to help me through thick and thin, to keep me happy when the world is on my shoulders, it nearly kills me. As I write this, my tears drown me in the loss of the only person who truly knew me. 

So here goes. You have been to me, everything I always wanted in a best friend. You gave me years of fun, love and protection(sometimes a bit more than I would have liked!) You will remain forever in my mind, the always smiling boy, who never showed his sadness, no matter what. I thought, as stupid as it sounds, that nothing would ever happen to you, you've just always been so strong. I will forever honour my promise to you, to never mourn your absence, only to celebrate your life. I know you will remain forever by my side, unseen to all others. My best friend, my partner in crime, my brother. Look after Granny for me, please.
