Worn

Worn

A Poem by Robin
"

Somewhere between here and there

"

She was at a coinflip crossroads

burning cheap gas on a daydream

she was running to somewhere -

away.

she was seeing double and she had to pee

down to two cigarettes and she was dying for a beer

it was 2 A.M.

she looked for a sign, a light , a falling star

just something to guide her .

so she stopped -

and got out.

she had never felt a night so dark

the wind was fierce and she still had to go

so she did it right there in the middle of the road

and she laughed out loud with only God and the coyotes to hear.

and stood there with the wind messing her hair

and caught herself ...

hoping

for just a star , a sign , a light to guide her

and she went back to her worn-out car

and found a look-away quarter and turned to the east

a tear in her eye .

it was all she could do

because all she had to do -

was get through this night

This poem makes me wonder what kind of hell she had walked through. The imagery is spot on and I love that she peed right in the middle of the road. People really do that so I love this poem for it capturing true human nature on its bleakest hour. I can't picture this woman running from something or someone. Great write.

This is like a page fell from a much longer script... What a sense of character and motivation, time and place...
I have been on that road and looked for that star, I can tell you.

A favourite, Robin.

I liked the visual quality of this poem. Sometimes the simplest things are the most difficult and it takes everything we've got to win through.

it always amazes me what the mind can do, run rampant and crazed over something another would brush off....

as always, brilliant, Robin
