Flood

Flood

A Poem by Robin
"

it ain't pretty

"

turning stones

in a sunless chasm

an echo screams

these white walls roar of urgency

as instincts scramble to escape a fatal pause

frenzy marked in deep breaths

tears plead to the night

as her heart sinks in surging waters

winter hasn't been kind

futile fingers obsess on the peeling paint

of her sinking home

rusted tractors dormant in the field

where the night worries

and the sunrise breaks promises

she feels it slip , and watches helpless

dreams slide under the flood

and here ..

from the high ground

isolated inverted islands

dot these still rising waters

where from concrete shores

dories carry goddesses

a sacrifice to the sea

to learn to breathe under water

Awesome. You know, this caused so many images to flash through my mind. I started thinking about hurricanes...then oddly enough, the little mermaid (kill me, please!). Then, manatees and pirates who thought they were mermaids, and how close they've gotten to extinction...

It ain't pretty, but the flow, and the words, are. Nice work.

After reading your works, I am following the lens pointed at intense and deeply moving objects which are beatifully spread on your words. Deeply romantic poetry, 'romantic' said centuries ago when it still meant dance between grass and wind.

Water's a killer and you've certainly proved it with this very graphic post: 'where the night worries ~ and the sunrise breaks promises ~ she feels it slip, and watches helpless ~ dreams slide under the flood' ..

nothing and nobody's safe ..

the imagery you describe is pretty; but the effects of mother nature are not...no mercy - definitely a sink or swim expression

This poem creates many different images to grace my mind. It is one of hardship and struggles and of dreams fading away for one reason or another.

wow.. this is a powerfully evocative poem. i thought of the hurricanes i've lived through in Rhode Island. and the ones i've only heard of from the television..

this is just amazing. i particularly loved this part:

winter hasn't been kind
futile fingers obsess on the peeling paint
of her sinking home

it paints such a sharp image in my mind
