View of an Independent Voter

This are my views of why I became a part of the Independent party. I have never done anything like this before so I am a little nervous on everyone's thoughts.

VIEWS OF AN INDEPENDENT VOTER

On November 4, 2008, Americans had the choice to elect the next President of the United States. We the people would either elect Barack Obama, from the Democratic Party, John McCain from the Republican Party. As America voted, I like everyone else watched the polls, but the only difference would be on that day I chose not to vote. I had never voted before, and the reason would probably be the fact that I had gotten stuck in between the views of each candidate and what they were going to do for our country. I kept getting stuck because I would hear one good idea and would begin liking one candidate, then the other candidate would come give off another idea that I liked, and I would just flip-flop in between the two , and  this is what I considered as my decision not to vote. After the day of looking at the polls, and wondering who would be the next President I slowly took the time to myself to decide, which party I felt fit me the most. This party would end up being the Independent party.
I have always been one of those people who had problems with making a decision for themselves; this would be one of those situations. I mean the decision at one point became so difficult when I would try to talk to people, and they would begin talking about which party they affiliated with, and I couldn’t say anything because again I had no idea. To an extent, I had an idea, but I wanted to make sure it was the right choice before I started telling people.  Once I had made the decision of what party I belonged to, it did become easier to talk to people. Another thing was that when I had told people that I had not voted, and the party I chose, they were in some sort of shock because I had not voted. I kept hearing, “it doesn’t matter what party you are with, you still need to make a stand and vote. The point is to stand up what for what you believe in, and voting is the only way to do so.” After I had heard this, I felt like I should have done something, but by the time it had come down this it was too late. I also felt like I was against myself, because I am also one of those people that followed in standing up for what you believe, and I had done the complete opposite. When I talked to people about the election, I still never really shared my opinions with them. I had chosen a party for myself to share and that was all I felt needed to be shared. One thing I was told and I believe is the truth, and it is that there are two things in the world that you don’t talk about, and those two things are religion and politics. A good example of this is when I had chosen a party that will probably never win a presidential election; I still had my secret deep down feeling of who would win, and why I had felt that they had deserved the honor of President of the United States.
The reasons behind my decision to become considered an independent are probably more personal than any other possible factors out there today. One of my reasons is the fact that I have always been a person who cared more about the little things, than the large issues that made up the election.  This also held true for all the elections I have witnessed in my lifetime, not just this years in particular. I have been told this is some kind of problem, but I believe that even the some of the smallest issues become some of the largest and can make an even bigger impact on the world. Another reason would have to I am usually considered a follower instead of a leader, and during this instance I guess you could still consider myself as a leader. I am considered this because I believe I am leading my own life towards what I believe might be needed necessary to make some changes in our country. Another reason it probably suits me more than the other two parties because it is what I consider an “in-between” party. It’s the party that’s stuck in the middle of the two largest that make up our country. I am usually in the middle of two different things, and that is something that it made stand out and suit me best. To be honest, I don’t know if this is true, but I have always head that the independent party was also the party that was big on the small issues, and left the larger ones up to the bigger parties. If this happens to be true, then consider it yet another reason of why I decided to become a member of the Independent party of these United States.

Hmm. Interesting political essay! I voted... might have not won, but all votes count sometime.

This was a very interesting essay. I liked to hear it from your point of view. I'm not at the age to vote yet, but I know that I will also be an Independent. Personally, I am not all that big on essays, but I think that you did a good job for it being your first time. Great work!
