The Dark Downs

The Dark Downs

A Poem by Raymond Federle
"

The Dark Downs

"

Showing how much they all are unstable,

skimming onward toward stormy quays.

I'd like to subscribe but I'm truly unable.

What to do till my end of days?

Coalescing into an ineffable infinity of serendipity,

My soul all covered with ice and snow,

Savor each passing glimpse of eternity,

but burn in perdition,

with flames below.

And all the joy of life,in spite of me,
I keep living twice,
the past.

Feel the loving embraces, bitters my breath,

breadth, and sorrow within.

I could see, the last.

I can not decide;

I cannot suffer choice;

but the spirit shed has left old phantasms,

the gilded hand glides over my face,

Dark...

Down...

Into infinite chasms.

First let me say how much I appreciated the rhyming of phantasms and chasms- that I have not seen before and found it to be highly unique. Life is filled with fire and ice and although I prefer the warmth of the fire I find myself more often than not sitting on a block of ice shivering over the past and the future. I can relate to this on a visceral level. You poem is well done and I feel it.

I keep living twice,
the past.

And yet we cannot change it but I understand the length of time we spend there.
