Hanging OnA Poem by Matthew SoliguenFreedom In Slavery
The wolves howl as the moon lights up the sky.
I gaze in envy, hearing their shouts as it echoes the valley. How can such lowly animals be free? Even the birds can fly from their cages, and set course for home. I am bound. Bound by the rules of this world. I envy the fish who have an ocean to swim, and yet still manage to live full lives. Why should they be free? Am I not greater than them? The sunset turns the sea into hell. Another day has passed. When I wake, I will still be here. In this world, I come crying. Will I leave crying as well? When can a man say he has lived his life? Are we not all enslaved to the society? Do this, and do thats, we must be productive to be accepted. And yet when a bird falls, his brethren come to feed him seeds and lift him up to their nests. Why should we be different? These chains feels heavy in my arms, and yet I can't see them. The rain drowns me in my sorrow, for I know even these animals have a shelter. I had lost all hope. My dreams had failed me. My home is gone, and no one dares pick me up from the pit I fall. They say your knowledge will lift you up. But many more fiends struck me down. I am alone in this world, as I am enslaved. I envy you, who can come home to a family. To a bed. To a life. As people pass by, I ask them. Not for change. But for a change. Who knows what we can achieve, if we are not bound by our immoral slavery of each other. Maybe one day, we can all achieve change. I envy you, who can read without worries. For you are greater than most people out here in the real world. Here I say, hanging on to a rope, and yet hanging on for dear life.
