Time runs out.A Story by Matthew SoliguenTime and love both run out.I should have known. I watched her being loaded in the ambulance as the numbers on my wrist began to tick to zero. It's my fault. It's all my fault We live in a world where you know when you meet your soul mate by the clocks on your hands. Everyone has one, born with one. We live in a world where the government controls us more than we know. Cameras spies us everywhere. Not only that though. We die the longer we keep the clock ticking after we meet our soul mate. Marriage is supposed to stop it, but then again what would I know? As I was going home I saw her. The most beautiful girl I've ever seen, she sat opposite to me on the train, reading what seems to be a romance novel. I tried so hard not to stare so much, but couldn't help it. She was gorgeous. As I stared at her, she looked up, and immediately, I started looking at empty space. I could hear her giggling. She knew what I was doing. I looked at her again, and this time I gave her a smile. She smiled back. I reached for her arm and introduced myself. So did she. Jenny, what a beautiful name. We chatted casually, and I can't help but stare at her. She got off at the next stop, and even though it wasn't my stop, I got off too, hoping to know her better. We bought coffee at a nearby stand before she told me she needed to hurry home. Too much work to do, she said. I glanced at the clock on my wrist, then disappointment flooded me. I have 2 days left before I meet my soul mate. She's not the one, but I could feel she is. The next day, going back home from work I saw her again. She seemed rather pale compared to yesterday, but she still gave me that same smile she always did. Not only that, she gave me her number. I called her that night, we talked for hours, and my heart felt so light. I never felt this before. Is this what it feels like to be in love? The next day, I was excited to ride the train, knowing she'd be there. She wasn't. And when I got home, I called her. Then I knew something was wrong. her voice sounded quiet and in pain. She begged me, begged me to come to her. I ran on the streets pushing people as I ran towards her flat. When I opened the door I saw her collapsed on the floor, blood coming from her mouth. I checked her pulse, and then I saw. Her clock was moving in negatives, 49 hours and 56 minutes have passed since she met her soul mate. Then I knew who it was. It was me. She struggled, and with her last breath she told me why she didn't say anything. She saw I had two days left, she wanted me to be happy, she thought she never deserved me. And I held her. And for the first time in years, I cried. The paramedics arrived, and took her to the hospital morgue. One of the paramedics, a woman, questioned me how she died. I can't speak. My clock went to zero as she approached. Now I've met my soul mate. But at what cost? At what cost?
