Breathless

Breathless

A Poem by RayLynn

I dreamed of reaching for the stars and landing on the moon

I dreamed of flying high above everything

I dreamed of bright lights and gold stars

I dreamed of being on top of the world, way up high where all my fears and doubts have been forgotten

And then one day I stopped

I began to reach

I stretched so high I touched the sky and aimed for a land far away

I flew through the clouds and past the sunset, up into the great void of time and space where nothing matter except my own misguided inhibitions

And suddenly I couldn’t breathe anymore

I was choking on nothing and everything all at the same time

Then I began to fall

And I fell and fell and fell until I crashed into the ground

I lay six feet under the surface in a box of stale air and realize that I’d aimed too high all along

So now my marker will forever read, “Here lies a stupid girl who forgot there’s no oxygen in space”
