Falling in Love

Now I know why the phrase falling in love is used to describe that first feeling of love for another person

Because I fell in love once

But it wasn’t a romantic love; she was my best friend

We made so many memories and inside jokes, she was my true soul mate

She understood me like no one else did and I trusted her

She was there for everything: my accident, when he left, my surgery, our trips, and the class that took it just a little took far

And we fought side by side, until one day we turned to face each other in a fight, and the world stopped turning, because for once she was the one turning, only she was turning away from me

I extended an olive branch, but that’s the thing about fire, it burns everything in its path, especially wood

And just like that she was gone

Like I said before, I finally understand why it’s called falling in love

Because getting back to where you were before, and who you used to be, is an uphill battle, getting blisters and scars on your way back up that cliff, losing your grip and falling again until you’ve hit rock bottom

And some of us aren’t strong enough to climb back up, some of us cling to the wall crying for help, some sit at the bottom and panic because they’re trapped, and others work like never before to get back to where they used to be, only to realize that it’s all changed

The battles from the past have destroyed everything and wreaked havoc in your life

So we start over and rebuild ourselves

And we’re happy for a while, until we fall again

I really liked the idea that your soul mate can be a best friend. I have definitely felt like that with someone before, so this poem really touched me. Keep posting :)

Very meaningful piece; very open and full of raw emotion. I especially like the last line of this prose poem; it really shows the harsh 'fall' of "falling in love" is more of a cycle than one experience alone. Something about the beginning, where you mention the partner as a best friend really drew me into reading this, and I'm glad I did. It's truly a special piece, Ray. Great work!
