Chapter 1: Dreaming

He was looking at me with the strangest expression. It seemed as though he was afraid of me. I walked slowly towards him. I could feel my eyes brim with tears.
"What are you?" he whispered. His voice was full of pain and confusion. I looked away from his tortured eyes for a moment to notice that he was kneeling in a pool of blood. My nose flared at the smell of it. He had his left hand pressed against the base of his neck. His hands were dripping of the red liquid. I felt a twinge of relief. He was alive.
"Jacob....," I pled, "what's wrong? Who did this to you?" I heard a low growl from behind me. I turned slowly to meet eyes with a familiar, hungry looking man. I gasped.
"No," I whispered in disbelief. I was facing my own kind. I could hear no heart beat in his chest, no blood pumping through his veins. It was my older brother, Michael.
"Michael! Please tell me you didn't do this to Jacob! Please!" My voice cracked twice. A wide smile spread across his face, humored by my reaction. He nodded.
"Why? He didn't deserve this!" It was true. Jacob didn't deserve to become one of us. I didn't want to ever put him through it. It was a painful memory to me now, but it still creeps into my thoughts. I love Jacob, but I never wanted him to be cursed to a life like mine. To be like me; a monster. I couldn't bear to put him in that situation. Ever. there was a possibility I could lose him forever.
"Dear little sister," he began mockingly. "Isn't this what you wanted? To be with your lover for the rest of your existence?" His eyes lingered to Jacob. "Looks like the transformation is beginning." Jacob then screamed in pain, in agony. I turned on my heel and ran to his side.
"Jacob! Jacob, can you hear me?"
"It burns! It burns! What's happening to me? Help me! Help me, please!" I froze. I couldn't do anything to help him. I could see the pain in his eyes.
"Jacob, you have to calm down. Trust me."He turned to me, his eyes searching for answers on my face. He nodded and closed his eyes. he started to relax. I laid him carefully on the ground before I faced my brother.
"I don't understand. You know as well as the rest of our family that I never wanted Jacob to go through the transformation!" I could hear my voice rising in volume. A flash of shock appeared on his face. He quickly smiled. "I couldn't understand how you could love a human." He paused to watch my face. I don't know what he was searching for, but he seemed pleased. "It was until he moved here that you started to change." It was true that I changed my opinion on the humans when I met Jacob. I always thought humans where stupid, gross, and uncivilized. I remember watching them eat in the cafeteria at school, in restaurants, and feeling repulsed. "You remember, don't you?" He pulled me out of my reverie. I simply nodded.
"It was happier times before you met that thing," he continued, pointing to Jacob. I turned to look at him. I noticed he was sitting upright, leaning against the wall behind him. His eyes were full of anger; very intent. He was listening. The transformation hasn't taken over fully, but it was getting dangerously close.I had to end this soon. Michael laughed as he read my face. He knew what I was thinking.
"You can't beat me, little sister," he shouted matter-of-factly. "I'm going to try." I wish I was as brave as I sounded.
Just then, Michael dissappeared. My eyes searched frantically for him. "Watch out!" Jacob's voice was only a whisper, but I heard him loud and clear. I dodged out of the way of Michael's fist just in time. Could he really see Michael's movement?
"He's getting really annoying," Michael whispered in the darkness. Oh no. I ran in front of Jacob just in time to catch Michael's wrist. His claws glittered in the moonlight. "Don't you know better than to turn your back on your opponent, Michael?" I said smugly. He laughed. A loud maniacal, sinister chuckle. "I can now that I know your weakness." He grinned.
I felt a sharp pain in my side at that moment. It was that smell again. It was coming from me. I could feel the scarlet liquid oozing out of my body. He got me. His grip grew tighter around me as he threw me out of the way. I landed hard on the ground behind him.
"My dear sister, you will never learn," Michael sighed as he approached me slowly. He held his claws to his nose to examine the blood on his fingertips. "Your blood smells better than I dreamt it would." He flashed his brilliant white teeth towards me. He grabbed me by my neck, turned, and threw me against the wall in back of him. I heard the sickening crack when I landed on the ground in front of Jacob. The pain started to spread from my broken leg. I winced. I was defeated, helpless, and, worst of all, I was going to die in front of my Jacob.
I could hear my name being repeated somewhere in the distance. Just then, I felt Jacob's warm soft touch on my cheeck. He scooped me into his arms. I buried my face in his chest and started to cry. I was ruining his shirt with the salt water coming from my icy blue eyes. He didn't care.
I wanted to stay caressed in his arms. I didn't want to move. I could hear Michael's soft footsteps as he walked to me. To finish me. I could feel Jacob's strong arms tighten around me as Michael got closer, pressing me against his warm chest. I looked up into his pleading brown eyes. They were filled with fear of losing me. I touched his cheek gently with my fingertips. I could hear his pulse quicken.
"I'm sorry, Jacob. I should have told you sooner."
"Don't apologize. You would have told me eventually. Whenever you felt the time was right. I wish I didn't have to learn your secret this way, but I'm glad I know the truth. I don't care what you are. As long as we're together." He spoke willingly, from his heart. I started to tear up again. I would miss his honesty, the sound of his heart beat when I touched him, the look in his eyes as he spoke to me. He slowly pushed back the blonde strands of hair on my face as he looked unwillingly into my eyes. His brown graceful eyes were gradually changing color. The transformation was complete. He will be thirsting for blood soon.
Why did it have to end this way? His color changing eyes bore into mine as I tried to speak again. "I'm sorry, Jacob," I whispered. "I love you" were the last words to escape my lips before I closed my eyes. The pain started to subside. I was going to die soon. I could faintly feel Jacob's firm palm on my cheek. He started to sob.
"No, please no! Don't leave me! I love you! No matter what happens! I don't care what you are! I love you no matter what!" I could hear the pain and pleading in his voice. I didn't want to leave him here.
Helpless against Michael. Alone. He couldn't fight Michael. He was still recovering from the transformation. And Michael was too strong, too weel trained. I'm a sorry excuse for a vampire. I couldn't even protect the one I loved. I was still weak.
I could still feel Jacob's warm hand on my cheek. Gently stroking it. His hand tilted my head slightly.
I felt his smooth lips press softly against mine. That's all I remembered before I passed out.
