Dwindling Cigarettes

Dwindling Cigarettes

A Poem by Ranger Kessel

High beams knife low fog billows.

Wipers slash rapid across fractured windshield.

Purple streaks lacerate red, twilight sky.

Thunder clashes eerie rumble.

Dwindling cigarettes.

Ash falling on soft, leather seats.

pine air freshener twirling

from center mirror.

Vent blasts warm air on sandaled toes.

Water streams fast neon pearls.

Black suit blues hiss and broken speaker.

Spring essence seeps through loose windows

Tires pounding wet, puffy- tarred cement.

Orange hazard cones

Steep pebbled dividers.

Ringed finger snuffs

hot ash in metal tray.

Shoulder belt loosens.

Red fingers seize

plaid blanket throw.

Hands cover yawns.

Damp fingers knotted.

Mirror hazes dark.

Tired forehead

pressed in tender arms.

Blanket covers soft wounds.

Teal, white walled comet

zipping through elastic,

blue elements.

An evening of fresh somber

youth lucidly coalesced in

spirit of a roving, anxious soul.
