James "Buster" Douglas Knockout Boxing

James "Buster" Douglas Knockout Boxing

A Story by Randy Johnson

If my memory serves me correct, I bought "James 'Buster' Douglas Knockout Boxing" for the Sega Genesis thirty years ago today on July 8, 1992. It's a side-scrolling boxing game and was the very first boxing game that was released for the Genesis.
James 'Buster' Douglas defeated Mike Tyson in 1990. It was one of the biggest upsets in boxing history. After defeating Tyson, Douglas failed to defend his title even once. He was beaten the very next time he fought. He was defeated by Evander Holyfield.
I already owned two other boxing games for the NES that I bought during the Summer of 1988. "Ring King" and "Mike Tyson's Punch-out!!". I bought Ring King first because I thought it would be the better game. But after buying Mike Tyson's Punch-out!! a few weeks later, it quickly became my favorite of the two.
"James 'Buster" Douglas Knockout Boxing" differs from a lot of other boxing games because the referee is in the ring while the prizefighters fight. Many other boxing games don't have the referee in the ring during the fights.
On "James 'Buster' Douglas Knockout Boxing", you can choose to fight as one of the following five boxers. "James 'Buster' Douglas", "Detroit Kid", "Dynamite Joe", "King Jason" and "Kim Nang". In order to beat the game, you must defeat four of the previously listed fighters twice and the final boxer called "Iron Head" who wears a mask.
While this isn't my all time favorite boxing game, I did enjoy it. It had impressive graphics for the time and it was pretty cool. It was the second game that I owned for the Sega Genesis and the third boxing game that I bought.
