Peter Davison's 40th Anniversary As The Doctor

Peter Davison's 40th Anniversary As The Doctor

A Story by Randy Johnson

I began watching the classic Doctor Who TV show in early 1984. I was only twelve years old at the time. The first episodes that I watched were Tom Baker episodes. I've always been a huge fan of the classic Doctor Who, but I'm certainly not a fan of the new Doctor Who.
It was forty years ago today when part one of Peter Davison's first Doctor Who episode aired. It aired on January 4, 1982. His first episode is titled "Castrovalva". At the time, Davison was the youngest actor to play the role of The Doctor. He was only thirty when he was chosen for the role in 1981. He was the fifth actor to star as The Doctor.
When I first started watching Doctor Who, I didn't know that actors other than Tom Baker had starred as The Doctor as well. When I learned that Davison had replaced Tom Baker, I resented him for it. I thought that Baker had been fired and replaced by Davison. But at the time, I didn't know that Tom Baker quit.
After I started watching Davison's episodes, I was pretty satisfied with his performances as The Doctor. He isn't my favorite Doctor but I do believe that he gave very good performances. Davison's episodes began airing in 1982 and finished airing in 1984 when he quit.
Tom Baker starred in over forty episodes of Doctor Who. I was shocked when I learned that Peter Davison only starred in twenty episodes. But Tom Baker starred in seven seasons of Doctor Who. Davison only starred in three seasons.
My two least favorite Davison episodes are "Castrovalva" and "Black Orchid". My favorite Davison episode is "The Canes Of Androzani" which was Davison's final episode. Peter Davison was replaced by Colin Baker in 1984. By the way, Colin is not related to Tom.
It was forty years ago today when people first watched Davison perform as The Doctor. He was the first Doctor to be listed as "The Doctor" in the credits. Before that, the other actors who starred as The Doctor were listed as "Doctor Who" in the credits.
Peter Davison isn't the best actor who starred as The Doctor, but I don't think he is the worst either. He did a great job and I'm happy to say that I've seen all twenty of his episodes.
