Ernestine Ophelia 1876-1970

Ernestine Ophelia 1876-1970

A Poem by Randolph
"

Took a stranger on a walk through a cemetery. It was that kind of day.

"
Ernestine Ophelia.
1876-1970.

Given over to a Springtime Dream.
Lazily painting away 'til Summertime.
Drifting through Leaves with Ernestine.
Found a corner of Me that wasn't mine.

Still-cold thoughts in a still-cold breeze.
Tasting tomorrow's childlike fascination.
The fresh palate of Infant mysteries,
Decorating the steps of Ophelia's destination.

And in such a way she walked with me.
Guarding her home and all within it.
Granting me Elfin eyes so I could see.
Winter leaves so Spring could begin it.

Though loss was felt, the shadow's cold.
Even though with Winter Ophelia had danced.
A new season was felt, and growing bold.
With graceful ease her next partner glanced.

No longer was this Ophelia's icy garden.
Her favored partner now moved along.
With a by your leave and beg your pardon,
Began the tempting rhythm of another song.

Springtime arrives again, and at last.
Slumbering Silence departs dressed in green.
Frozen stillness now echoes of the past.
For Springtime belongs to lovely Ernestine.
