The Starving Ones

The Starving Ones

A Poem by Nicholas Antonio Young
"

Song thing and stuff

"

Those of you standing atop mountains of gold

You believe what you have contains substance

You believe what you have is all that ever mattered

But how long will it sustain you?

How long will it sustain you before you're empty again?

For you have a hunger that power will not satisfy

A thirst that an ocean of gold will not quench

A question that playing god will not answer

An infinite darkness which fires cannot enlighten

The problem is that you know but cannot see

You're swimming through darkness looking for light

You're drowning in the anguish of unknowing

But you do not believe

You do not believe what is truly inside of you

For you have a hunger that power will not satisfy

A thirst that an ocean of gold will not quench

A question that playing god will not answer

An infinite darkness which fires cannot enlighten

What I see in your eyes is death by starvation

Lives lived void of all that was ever needed

Willingly enslaved souls begging for scraps

I will tell you the truth

I will tell you the truth of your lifeless perception

Only through love, will you find meaning to your existence

This was really wonderful and had a very powerful meaning. As I saw the title, I first thought it was about homeless children or starving children in another country. Turns out, the meaning was something completely different as I began reading. Good metaphor! And it's true how the belief of power will consume and someday destroy people. They become addicted to the essence of power, the thrill and rush of how it works and effects, possibly benefits a person. But people can't always have power for too long, if they get too lost in it, they will lose all thought and feeling of who they are. Like in Lord of the Rings! The ring is a symbol of power and whoever has hold of it becomes consumed and it slowly begins destroying them from the inside out. Wonderful write, you truly have a gift for words! :)

this is a great poem and great lyrics and i would love to know the back story of this poem. I love the line that says that they are "willingly enslaved souls".

Great poem, and I can see it being put to music. The chorus or repeated part was brilliant, and the verses complimented it nicley. Fantastic work :)
