Death of the Winter GoddessA Poem by RainbowcoA tale of the rise of Christianity in Druid times.
During the night, while the moon shone
The first hard frost scattered white,
Covering the ground in a layer of thin lace,
Decorated with strands of silver traces,
A wonder world in monochrome tones.
Red holly berries fall on the worn path
Like blood drops from the slain stag,
Who offered up his throat in the past
As sacrifice to an ancient Druid deity
That traveled down from the crag.
Now winds shift from west to east;
The smoke of the fire and night mists
Parting to reveal the one who did exist
Before the building of this stone abbey,
A growing power none could resist.
Surrounded by coolness and light,
The winter goddess shows her face;
In her eyes burn the fires of blue ice,
Freezing tears into oval diamonds,
That scatter in the air like wedding rice.
As the evening star blends with daybreak
The last haunting call of the owl disappears
Into the loud ringing peals of chapel bells;
And, the winter goddess becomes snowflakes
As the Holy Lord's worshipers appear.
