Ode to Hummingbirds

Quick darting arrows of blue green feathers

Capture the sun’s shine to brilliant breast,

Collecting my eye among the purple heather

Flitting from bloom to bloom without rest

Long beak suited for sampling nectar sweet

From deep within the orange flower trumpets

Wings a humming blur, hovering, hovering

To me a most delightful welcome treat

Streaking through the garden like comets

Moving onward to new discoveries

You arrive with late spring’s colorful burst

To my garden, you come and visit each day

A bird so small yet a glimpse of you I thirst

You who die in the cold of the night, they say

And come back to life with the warmth of the sun

Like you I would soar through the sunbeams

And bath on the smallest of leaves

Then dance in the morning mist that comes

Rising up above gentle flowing streams

Such are the legends that you weave

Tiny totem teach me enjoyment of creation

Lend me your senses that I too may taste

The joy of living with such great appreciation

Delighting in the flowers with aromas graced

I would learn to draw from life the sweet essence

Hovering over the beautiful moments in my life

Sometimes flying backwards to savor the past

But always returning to this time’s brilliance

For you there is only acceptance never strife

The charm of hummingbirds will forever last

What a lovely poem about one of my favorite little friends. So many great lines in this poem, such as "Tiny totem teach me enjoyment of creation" and "Hovering over the beautiful moments in my life" and "Sometimes flying backwards to savor the past" I thought the language of this poem was so creative and delightful. Truly this was a joy to read!

oh yeah... I once had a small hummingbird feeder in the form of a flower with the tiny nectar bottle behind the plastic "flower"... I sat upon the deck below the larger feeder and sure enough a hummingbird fluttered just above my hand held feeder until it got it's fill and flew off once again. Gee that must have been eight summers ago? Your poem reminded me of that day once again. Thank you!! Sallie Bear

style and form... I know not of or pay attention to... it's the rhythm of your words that carried me thru the piece which so beautifully captures the hummingbird's existence. I put out "nectar" for the Hummers in hopes to catch them as they come to "tank up". Fine write!! Sallie Bear

I'm no authority, but I like this poem very much. It's easy to understand and flows well. I happen to like watching hummingbirds, also. A very nice job, Rainbowco. Sam
