Nightscare

Nightscare

A Poem by Rainbow333

Nightscare

Looking back afraid...
she hears her breathing,
her beating heart zipping
like a bat in her chest....

She stops to catch her breath
taste the salt from her eyes...
her mouth dry, open to cry
fear pulsating too great to bear

Stars shining, once so beautiful,
eerie now, flaming bolts of fire
no moon, hid behind a cloud
leaving trails of silver in the sky

She pants trying to be silent
alone she hides behind a vine
waiting in shadows for the dawn
a shadow falls on her, looming large

Shape of a man with wolf's snarl
growling fangs drool razor sharp
she tumbles shocked to the ground
leaving gouges where nails dug into bark

Morning comes shining away the dark
golden rays pierce trees, birds chirp
a hawk black as midnight circles slowly....
diving fast now...eyes burning scarlet

Beak sharp clutching tightly
a hand, fingers curling, nails vermilion
wings rising with his prize...
settles flapping while ants crawl
over a nightmare broken in the bush.
