Sweet Matilda

Sweet Matilda

A Poem by Petals & Pearls

Today she told us it was time
Her spark of life was waning
I took her little paws in mine
with what strength I had remaining

I laid down there right beside her
We all showered her with praise
I ran my fingers through her fur
And left my kisses on her face

You are the goodest little butt
I'll miss all our silly play
My sweetest little butternutt
I'd move the world to make you stay

And though I cannot go with you
A part of me surely will
If doggos are not people too
Why leave people sized holes to fill

The loss of a much loved pet, is difficult to deal with. I still remember the loss of our dog when I was eight years old. I can still hear my Dad digging the cold December ground to bury him. I never cried, but I can remember the ache I had inside even now. Since then, we have had cats and their loss has been very sad too. Our animals become family. Each one of them has a distinct personality. Your poem is beautifully penned and I am sorry for your loss.

This one hits close to home. I have two aging cats I will someday have to face such a crisis with. I don't look forward to it. They are family members.

I'm reminded of the time I had to put my cat to sleep after finding him shot in the eye by some kids pellet gun. I had him for close to 8 years. I was literally devastated by his loss. I had found him beneath a pile of old wooden planks abandoned by his mother. He was so tiny and his eyes hadn't opened yet. I brought him to my grandmother who said he might not make it through the night. She helped me feed him droplets of warm milk. From that day on we were inseparable. It's been close to 3o years and I still miss him. Your poem reminds me of what it's like to lose, not something, but someone, special. Thank you for sharing your poem with us.
