A Chapter by Raghav Vaid

He looked on carelessly through the train's window as the world whizzed past him, enveloped in a morbid dark. The cool air hit his face as he rested his chin on the cold steel grill. The rushing air that came in through the gaping windows carried a familiar sense of comfort in its folds, and gave everyone a glimpse into what lay in the dark out side. The sugar mills, the rice farms, the rising chimney smoke and hoards of cattle. The view in front of him was of nothingness, the endless flowing ocean of black often disrupted by small flashes of light, a distant household bulb, a shimmering street light, a vehicle or two, a small shop perhaps or a lit fire maybe. It was as if each burst of illumation was breathing its last, trying best to tell its own story but eventually disappearing over the distance away from the speeding train giving way to the ever flowing ink of night time. His own train of thoughts got derailed when a super fast Duranto express haughtily sped away in the opposite direction as if mocking the comparatively snail like pace of the train he was in. Most of his fellow passengers were fast asleep. He turned his attention to the inside of the train, to the sound of a baby crying and the mother singing a lullaby to send him back to dream world, the hushed whispers of love being shared by a young couple oblivious to the gawking eyes, the incessant shouting of a group of students over chai-samosa and the low humming of the ceiling fans. He plugged in his earphones to shut out the commotion and be by him self again. Though five years had passed since that fateful incident took place but it was still fresh in the pages of his memory like footprints on wet sand. Unlike the footprints though, those memories were intransient in nature, not to be washed away by the relentless tides of time. The end had brought a new beginning.
