To Face A Giant

To Face A Giant

A Poem by Rae Merkle

A volley of thunder

stirs above my head,

and the rain echoes a reply,

as I observe with halted breath.

From the back porch,

I hold the pressure in my chest,

and almost dare the downpour

to reach out, touch my feet,

my hands, my face--

the doors are wide open!

There is a pause, taut as a bow,

before another volley sounds.

And without a word, I watch

as the colossus marches on,

leaving me overwhelmed

with the urge to bow.

I really love this write, I like what John said as well.

Indeed, the clouds of an oncoming storm can be overwhelming. Especially if they're shaped like a funnel.

Outstanding. You conjure both fear and wonderment at the passing storm. The best poem I've read today.
