When the World Stills

When the World Stills

A Poem by Rae Merkle

I walk down this pathway a casual observer.

I see the light in a window change across the way,

a lone stranger on the sidewalk passes me by.

I can hear a car hiss past in the city below,

nearly a whisper amidst the crickets.

It feels almost forbidden,

as a forbidden witness of forbidden life

of a forbidden time that is so dead

 yet so alive.

I watch in awe as the night carries on

while the world stills its breathing,

and continue walking.
