Restoration

A Poem by R. Oxley
"

repairing the house, and my relationship with my parents

"

rebuild this old house together

repairs long overdue

it's hard to fix something you've always

known to be broken

save the foundation and the hardwood floors

remove the walls we no longer need and thorns

embedded in the scar tissue

new support, new paint

make it our home for the first time.

The house seems to be symbolic of a difficult parent-child relationship. The foundation and the hardwood floors represent the good things that are worth saving, while the walls and thorns speak of separation and pain. New support and paint, though, and there is hope for the future. Indeed, never give up.
