Flat Affect

Flat Affect

A Poem by Mercury Rising

I am a stone

I do not care

I haven’t got

A soul to bare.

Numb from within

Pain from without

Yet no response

No cry, no shout.

Anger without expression

And without fear

I walk into the fire

And cannot shed a tear.

Remorse with no reaction

Sadness without gain

Where is an emotion

To take away my pain?

Locked away inside

Forever is my heart

Always held a captive

No feeling to impart.

A prisoner of sorts

Of which I have no choice

I scream aloud and silence

Echoes in my voice.

Emotions from my mind

Move outward to my eye

Then down into my heart

Where they fade away and die.
