Predator and Prey

Predator and Prey

A Poem by Rachel_Biggs

Feeding, gnawing, draining,

Until all life is gone,

I can feel it begin.

Until the end comes,

We wait in silence,

Motionless, Predator and Prey,

Face each other warily,

One eye open, one eye shut,

Hoping to empty starlit skies,

The other moves first.

Where is the answer?

In each head, a storm is brewing,

Waiting to explode,

Anger contorts, Grief twists, Emotion fragments and shatters,

Time clouds, Fate shadows,

Who will answer the call?

Neither wants to,

We know it must be done,

Neither can handle,

Neither can hold on.

It’s been too long,

Something inside has died,

The key is missing, the map burnt,

There is no way out.

Something must be done,

Frozen by nameless emotions, stricken, stark contrast,

The difference is evident, no one can win.

For one to move, the other must concede.

Flames flicker, harsh gold.

A miniature sun,

Illuminating flaws, disguising perfection,

Conjuring imagery.

Glowing and confused,

We stare.

Wondering who will fall, and who will answer the call?
