Rover and Me

Rover and Me

A Poem by Rachel Miles

And so we set off. Down the road at a steady pace we pass familiar houses and sights.
Yes Rover, that broken glass was there yesterday, yes you must avoid it.
We turn off into the next road, children playing across the street giggle behind their lifted hands.
No Rover, they’re not laughing at you, you’re beautiful.
We decide to cross the road, to turn into the street with the beautiful trees with full blooms.
Yes Rover, we have to cross the road, no it’s not your fault that the car swerved.
We stop under the tree, staring at the flowers and smelling the scent of spring.
No Rover, we can’t go any further, it feels like a long way from home.
We turn back and move slowly, savouring the cool breeze around us.
Yes Rover, maybe we can come back tomorrow, I hope the weather is this good.
And so another trip is complete.

Rover makes me very happy. As long as I ignore the fact he’s my mobility scooter and I’m only 22.

I did not see that last line coming. Very poignant.
