Chapter 6

Chapter 6

A Chapter by Satan's Daughter

Snuggling down into the covers, I smiled at the thought that my nightmare was over. I was finally back home in my own bed, safe. I took a deep breath, looking to the familiar smell of home to comfort me. But, instead of the smell of the forest that permeated every surface of my house, My nose was invaded by the scent of antiseptic, floor cleaner, and fear. I frowned.
I recalled the events of my nightmare, replaying them in my head. I had a strange feeling that the answer might lie within them. Starting at the beginning, I remembered the cage, the doctor, Kane, a fight, and...
"Ari!" I bolted upright, my eyes wide and heart beating erratically. As I pushed the thin blankets off of me, I processed my surroundings. I was in a plain white room, maybe ten by ten, with nothing in it other than the bed I was in and a door. It was too much like the room with the cage for my liking.
I swung my legs over the side of the bed and my confusion peaked when I found that my clothes had been replaced by a pair of white sweatpants with elastic around the ankles and a white vee neck tee shirt. I had no shoes on.
Ignoring the wash of dizziness my actions brought on, I placed my bare feet on the cold tile floor and tried to stand. I say tried because I didn't succeed. The floor rushed up to meet my face but, before it could, my hands shot out and i caught myself. But even that didn't help much. I was so weak that the full weight of my upper body caused my elbows to collapse, forcing me to take the force of the fall on my cheek.
I tried in vain to get up, but every time I did, I wouldn't get more than six inched off the ground before gravity pulled me back down. Finally, I gave up and decided to regain my strength on the cool tile. It wasn't all that bad, as the cold flooring felt nice against my burning skin. I only became this hot when the full moon was coming, but that wasn't for another...
With a start, I realized that I had no idea what day it was. I didn't know how many days had passed since I had been brought here. The last memory of home I had was when I had been making dinner for myself. That had been the eighteenth, nine days from the next full moon. Surely that much time couldn't have passed without my knowledge.
I didn't have much time to dwell on that thought. The door swung open with a soft creak to reveal the doctor from earlier, the guard I had pounded into a wall, and Kane. Neither of the men seemed outwardly hurt from my beatings, but both wore matching death glares, and both had revenge in their eyes. The doctor, however, was smiling. She glanced at the now empty bed, her brow furrowing in confusion until she found me sprawled next to it. This made her smile widen.
"Shay, darling. What are you doing on the floor? You weren't trying to escape again where you?"
Her smile may have been warm, but her voice dripped with malice. Her dark eyes narrowed at me and conveyed her hatred and loathing for me better than any words could. Her hands were clasped in front of her, but I could tell they were itching to wrap around my throat.
I gave her my most feral snarl, very aware of how vulnerable my position left me. She probably wouldn't attack me, being smart enough to know that, in a fight between a human and a werewolf, I would come out on top. The guard, however, wasn't as sensible.
He took a step forward, his fists clenched and his blue eyes alive with fury. Walking towards me, He cocked his leg back, fully intending to kick me in the face, when the doctor stepped in. Placing a small hand on his bicep, she looked up at him and said, "Now, now Jackson. You can have your revenge later. We need her unharmed," glancing back at me, she added, "for now."
My hackles rose, not just at the pointed threat, but also at the murderously promising look Jackson gave me before he turned away. I felt it slither across my skin in a dark caress, hinting at unspeakable things to come. I did not take kindly to threats but, seeing as I was in no condition to kick his a*s, as much as I wanted to, I ignored it.
I was saved from further threats and questions when a sharp beep came from Kane's pocket. All eyes turned to him as he pulled a slim phone out of the pocket of his jeans, flipped it open, and pressed it to his ear. Without so much as a greeting, he listened for a moment, my sensitive ears straining to hear what the person on the other end was saying, but they were speaking too quietly. After a few seconds, he closed the device and pocketed it.
"Doc Beltain wants to speak with her," he said shortly. Striding forward, he grasped my upper arm and pulled me up, using more force than was necessary. I went tumbling into his chest and he took the opportunity to smirk down at me, our faces a mere inch apart. But as soon as it had happened, it was over, and I was being dragged out of the room.
