Chapter 4A Chapter by Satan's DaughterTaking a moment to compose myself, I walked out into the hall. Tasting the
air, I ran in the opposite direction as he had. Not only did I not want
it to look as if I had been running after him, but he had let me go once, I
doubted he would do it again. I wasn't willing to take the risk, especially
with my freedom on the line. I moved down the hall
with the stealth of a hunter and the grace of a wolf, constantly using my
superior nose to assess my surroundings. I passed rows of doors, knowing from
the lack of a breeze and security that none of them led outdoors. I continued
on until I heard voices headed towards me. Not wanting to be caught, I ducked
into the nearest door, closing it quietly behind me. I waited until the
voices passed before I turned around to observe the room I had ducked in. It
looked like a bedroom. The walls were a dark scarlet and the floor was carpet.
Against the wall sat a dresser, a bedside table, and a double bed covered in
dark blue sheets. A door on the adjacent wall led to what must be a bathroom. Scenting the air, I
turned around and looked to the corner of the room. There, perched on a chair,
sat a girl. Her black hair fell in layers to her shoulders, framing her slim
face. Her light brown eyes stared at me with burning curiosity. Even though she
was sitting, I could tell she was short, probably 5' 3". She wore black
skinny jeans and a dark green long sleeved shirt. Around her neck was a cross
and her feet were bare. Seeing me looking at her, she grinned, showing off her
pointed incisors. She jumped up and bounced
towards me, her eyes following my every move. When she stood in front of me,
she looked me up and down, then held out a small hand. "Arianna Clarissa
Silvers, call me Ari. If you don't, I will rip your jugular out. Vampire. Why
are you in my room? What's your name?" I hadn't expected such
a small girl to be able to produce such a big noise. Her exuberant voice seemed
out of place in the dark room. Looking down at the hand she held out, I waited
for her to retract it. When she finally did, a small frown graced her face. She
looked honestly upset. I almost felt bad. Almost. Moving back to the
door, I was surprised that it had a handle. I pressed my ear against it,
listening for any signs of people nearby. All was quiet. I was about to reach
for the handle when I heard a small huff. Glancing back over my shoulder, I saw
Ari standing there with her arms crossed over her small chest. Deciding to be
merciful, I said, "Shay." She blinked,
"What?" "Shay. That's my
name." A slow smile spread
across her lips and her eyes lit up. Obviously, she hadn't met anyone new in a
while. I wondered exactly how long she had been here. Pushing the thought
aside, I turned again to the door. I had my hand on the knob when she spoke
again. "Are you
leaving?" I sighed in
frustration and banged my head against the door once, before turning around
again. I was about to snap at Ari when I saw that her doe eyes were filled with
sorrow. I felt the scowl fall from my face when I saw that she was genuinely
distressed at the thought of being alone again. I realized that I had no idea
how long she had been here. I could very well be the first human contact she’s
had in a while. I felt my heart melt a
bit at the sight of her heartbroken expression. I was just about to invite her
to come with me when I remembered that I was escaping! She would only be a liability. Slipping on my
well-rehearsed mask of indifference, I glared at her, trying to ignore the hurt
that flashed through her eyes. Keeping my voice icy, I snarled, “Look, kid. I
don’t have time to play games. I’m getting the hell out of here and I don’t
need some leech dragging me down.” I turned around for
the third time- honestly, I was starting to get dizzy- and had the door cracked
when I heard it. It was a soft noise and, at first, I wasn't sure I had heard
it, until it came again. It was a sniffle, and it came from the girl behind me.
I glanced back over my shoulder and froze. Ari was crying. Her large eyes were
shiny with unshed tears, her pale skin and dark hair making her look even more
sad. I wasn't good when
dealing with emotions, as I was raised to have none, so I did the only thing I
could think of. I gave in. “Fine! You can come.
Just turn off the damn waterworks!” I sighed, hating that I let my soft side
through, even for a moment. As if a switch was
flipped, Ari’s eyes lost their tearful sheen, her bottom lip stopped trembling,
and she stopped whimpering like a pup. That
little b***h had been faking the whole time! Before I could dwell
on the fact that I had been played like a cheap fiddle, she was next to me,
pushing the door open and sticking her head out into the hall. After a few
seconds, she retracted it and gave me a thumbs up, signaling that we were good
to go. She stepped out cautiously, and when no running footsteps or angry cries
were heard, the rest of her body followed her head. Quietly, I crept out
of the room and lightly closed the door behind us, pondering momentarily if Ari
actually knew where she was going, or if she was just leading me into a trap.
Blindly trusting someone was not a skill in my extensive arsenal. We came to an
intersection, our steps almost silent on the tiled floor. I was surprised to
find that Ari was as quiet and stealthy as I was. We were both born hunters,
predators by nature, so I guess I shouldn't have been taken quite so off guard.
Without hesitation,
Ari turned left into a hallway that looked identical to the one we were just
in. We passed the same stainless steel doors, each with a small plaque that I hadn't noticed before. I glanced at one as we passed. It had a twelve digit
number engraved into it and below that was a species. This one read, 100036987234, and below that it said, Angel. I was sure I had read
it wrong. Angels didn't exist. The only supernatural species were Vampires,
Werewolves, and Witches. That was it. No Angels, no Demons. Just the basics.
That’s what my father told me, before he was killed, so that’s what I had
always believed. It was the truth. Right? Before I could put
much more thought into it, Ari stopped abruptly. If it weren't for my
heightened senses, I would have rammed right into her back and we would have
ended up on the floor. Not the best thing to do while escaping. I was about to
yell at her to keep going, when I saw the reason for our sudden halt. Standing about fifty
yards down the hall, looking as if he owned the place, was he werewolf a*s that
cornered me back in my room. I sucked in a sharp breath, drawing both sets of
eyes to me. He winked, a self-satisfied smirk pulling at his full lips. That
smile broke me out of my trance. I was in front of Ari in seconds, my need to
protect outweighing the sense of danger. I growled, the feral sound filling the
empty space between us. He took a few steps
forward before Ari’s hate- laced voice stopped him, startling us both. “Kane.” She spat his
name like it was a curse and, after what I had seen of him, I bet it was to
her. The malice in her voice made me glance back at her. I wasn't prepared for
what I saw. Her normally light brown eyes were blood red and full of fury. Her
fangs were extended and her pretty face was twisted up in a snarl. Her hands,
resting at her sides, were curled into claws. They twitched, as if they wanted
nothing more than to sink themselves into Kane’s flesh. This was the first
time I had seen a pissed off Vampire this close. I was glad I wasn't on the
receiving end of her murderous glare. Kane, however, seemed unaffected. He
merely raised an eyebrow and moved his gunmetal grey eyes back to me. I assumed
he found me in a similar state as the vamp behind me. I sensed my eyes
blazing yellow, filled with the flames of anger. Not only had he intimidated me
and made me feel weak, but he was blocking my way. My claws dug into my palm,
the only way I could keep them from slashing that infuriating look off his
face. My normally wild red curls were no doubt tangled and frizzy from the past
twenty four hours. I let a bit of the wolf slip out when I addressed the man in
front of me. “Get out of my way,
Kane. I’m getting out of here and if you try to stop me, I will kill you with a
smile on my face.” It wasn't a lie. Behind me, Ari grunted her agreement. To my utter
frustration, he laughed. The loud sound took me by surprise, something that has
been happening way too much lately, and silenced my growl. My cobalt blue eyes
narrowed as Kane clutched his gut, doubled over with laughter. Deciding enough
was enough, I rushed forward, bringing my knee up to make contact with his
lowered face. The angle was wrong so, instead of breaking his nose, he landed
on his a*s after a hit to the forehead. He looked stunned for a second before
his eyes blazed black. “B***h!” he snarled at
me. Before he could get to
his feet, I surged forward. His eyes widened as my foot made contact with his
temple, snapping his head to the side. He fell, and I smiled when I heard the
crack of his head making contact with the tile floor. A small pool of blood
began to form under his skull, and his eyes were closed. He was down for the
count. My victory was short
lived, as shouting arose behind us. Looking back, I momentarily registered that
Ari had not moved from her spot when something more pressing caught my
attention. About fifteen guards, dressed in black shirts and camo pants, were
running down the hallway towards us. My eyes widened. “Run!” I yelled to Ari.
Not needing to be told twice, she bolted. Turning on my heel, I followed. We
tapped into our super speed, practically flying down the hall. We turned
blindly down random hallways, no longer looking for a way out, but a place to
hide. I practically screamed when we came face-to-face with a dead end. Turning
around, we faced our pursuers. Ari’s breath came out
in soft pants, her eyes wide and still red. I caught flashes of her fangs and
wondered that, if push came to shove, she would be able to use them. I could
tell that my wolf desperately wanted to come out, and that she was nervous.
Neither of us liked being trapped. It made us feel like prey. The guards skidded to
a halt ten feet in front of us. All of them were built like semis. Broad chests
and shoulders, thick arms, and tense bodies made for an intimidating wall of
muscle. On instinct, I sized each one up individually, searching for
exploitable weaknesses. I could see them doing the same to us. I briefly
wondered how much of a threat they saw us as. The crackling silence didn't last long, as one of the guards stepped forward. His close cropped
blonde hair and baby blue eyes would have made him cute in any other situation,
but the cold, calculating look he threw our way squashed the appeal. His
numerous muscles rippled as he crossed his thick arms across his chest. From
the confidant stance and air of command, I assumed he was the leader. I found that strange, considering
he didn't look any older than me. “Stand down and come
quietly. I would hate to have to hit a woman.” He smirked. I could tell from
his tone that was a lie. The look in his eyes said that he would like nothing
more than to bust some skulls, particularly mine and Ari’s. Her small growl was
chorused by mine. Letting the wolf out a
bit, I said, “Pity. I would have loved to have the chance to kick your a*s.” Apparently, no one had
ever talked back to them, because they all looked at me as if I had grown
another head. The leader, however, merely uncrossed his arms and moved into a
crouch. “As you wish.” Then he sprang. My enhanced eyes
followed him as he flew through the air. Placing one foot behind the other, I
was ready for him when he reached me. My hand shot out and closed around his
beefy shoulder. I used his momentum to swing him around and slam him into the
wall behind him. The gasps that came from the other guards was punctuated by
Ari’s startled yelp. Grabbing the leader by
the back of his neck, I slammed his head into the wall four more times in quick
succession. Releasing him, I stepped back as he slumped to the floor. A slim
trail of scarlet trailed down his temple as his eyes fluttered and he let out a
pained groan. My eyes were drawn to
Ari just in time to see her red eyes slowly darken until they were completely
black, no pupil in sight. I only knew what my father had told me about
vampires, which wasn't much. But, telling by the way her hungry gaze was locked
on the blood pooling on the white tile floor, I think I knew what was
happening. She was going into hunting mode. She turned slowly, her
gaze traveling back to the other guards, who seemed to be shell shocked at the
thought of their leader being taken down so quickly by a girl. With their gazes
still locked on the body of their leader, they didn't notice the vampire in
front of them, even when she started to hiss. She crouched, locking her
soulless eyes onto the throat of the guard directly across from her. I could only watch in
horrid fascination as her small body tensed and her hissing ceased. Gathering
herself, she gracefully leaped through the air towards the oblivious guards. That’s when all Hell
broke loose. © 2013 Satan's DaughterAuthor's Note
