It is indeed a lovely day here at Tara.
I long for the time when it was Ashley's birthday, and we were alone together.
That was when he loved me of course. I believe he still does. He just denies
it. It would hurt Melanie so if he were to confess. Fiddle-Dee Dee! Being
around her makes me want to see him more!
That dog Rhett Butler refuses to assist me in paying the taxes on Tara.
They are up to $300 dollars! Hard times haven't suffocated my hope, not yet. I
promised myself the day that mother died, I would do whatever it takes to keep Tara
and my dignity. After I asked Rhett for the money with a follow up of
refusal, I went to Frank Kennedy. My
sister Suellen loved him, and he loved her... but he was taking far too long to
propose. Mammy and I went to his business in Atlanta,
and it was going relatively slowly, but it had magnificent potential. I thought I could make better decisions for
the benefit of the company than Frank ever could. I could pay the taxes on Tara!
With my dress smoothed, and my cheeks pinched pink, I confronted Frank. I lied,
explaining how Suellen has long moved on, and that he was taking too long to
propose to her. He looked so hurt. I saw
out of the corner of my eye, Mammy's expression of shock and disgust.
Especially when I asked if I could put my hand in his pocket.
A few
months later, I got his lumber business to achieve what I predicted it could.
If it wasn't for me, business wouldn't be flourishing, and the taxes on Tara
wouldn't be paid. I became Mrs. Scarlett Kennedy. Suellen hated me so for my lies to her
beloved, but I was doing what was best for my land. My Tara.
Sweet Melanie told her not to speak so awfully of me. Even though I despise the
marriage between Melanie and Ashley, it is impossible for me to be rude to her.
Rhett Butler dislikes how I use marriage only for money, yet he seems to admire
my will. What do I care? Fiddle -Dee Dee! He's the biggest scoundrel out of any
man that has ever lived.
