A Teachers Struggles

A Teachers Struggles

A Poem by Rachael Lea

Today in class we will learn about…

Does it really even matter take a look around

I may as well be talking to a wall

For when I ask a question I don’t even hear a sound

And when my time is up

They’re out the door with their feet barely touching the ground

Tomorrow Ill ask for their papers

And I will come across so many with the answers unfound

Welcome to my life, my life as a teacher

That is only a very little part of what it is I do when teaching class

I spend hours each night grading

Just to come to school and deal with their attitude and sass

As I see another bad mark I contemplate

What exactly I need to change in my lecture to help them pass

Whatever it is I need to come up with it fast

I don’t want to see them held back unable to move along with their mass

Out comes the lesson plans

I will change the way we do things in class today

I first need to figure them out

Come up with something cool and hip, something relatable to say

To grasp my audience’s attention

They need to learn this and I will find a way, for them I cannot betray

Hey they finally seem to be interested

Fingers crossed the retain all the information that I have conveyed

Author's Note

This still has a lot of work to do. I am having problems hitting certain points and aspects of a teachers life. Was wanting to make it 100% relatable for all of my friends who are teachers, I have so many this should be easy why am I having problems?

If you didn't hit every desired note, the piece is still strong in spirit. Long ago, I was one of those students who often didn't pay attention, didn't do my homework, and couldn't wait for class to end. I'm now very sorry to have been that way, but since I had zero support from home, was often ragged and hungry, it might not have entirely been my fault. Looking back, teachers were the best role models in my life, even though I let them down. Today, I can't even imagine how difficult a teacher's job must be. I know this for a fact--they do one of the most important jobs in the world.

What about the teachers pet? Make sure you put a bit about that too! haha. No seriously though, this is a really good poem. I did teacher aiding for a bit and discovered that it's a lot harder than it looks. Great write!

Teacher versus child is never an easy balance to achieve. Some kids value great teaching, whereas others find it is just not cool to engage as they already know everything they need to know, until reality bites and they find themselves lost in the big, bad grown up world. It is a never-ending test of ones patience in humanity to walk through that door each morning hoping to make a difference to just one more mind. Big respect to all those that spend their lives to such an undertaking. It is one of the few remaining true vocations in life.
ps....They make much more impact than they are ever given credit for(Yes, I'm talking to you MR. Gorman) :)

Try adding more feeling. What does it feel like to influence a young mind? What is it like to care about a child sometimes more than their own parents? Do you ever feel held down by sticking to modern day teaching techniques and bureaucracy? Have you ever observed bruises and scars from abused children?
