Clarity

Clarity

A Poem by Rosi S. Phillips

Walking down the street
I find myself looking down and scowling
They are weak creatures
Falling over their desires
It disgusts me, and I can only look down my nose with pity at them

Though hard and solid the door does not protect
Nor do the people inside
They think their intentions pure
But beneath the indirect communication
I hear the whisper woman

I am prohibited from staying out
From meeting friend
From going to friends' houses
I am to remain seen not heard, within the confines behind the door

I am steadfast
Wholly knowledgeable of my rights
Even if those rights are scarce

It is such a shame to say
Because I am in Egypt
I find myself fading away
