I Sit on a Car

I Sit on a Car

A Poem by Rosi S. Phillips

I sit on a car watching planes overhead

Watching blue, yellow, white, and black planes take flight

Watching a man kiss a woman goodbye and drive away

Watching a family check their bags

Watching my friend, next to me, watch them too

I see a car pass as we leave the airport

I see another and another and another

No one is walking, I see no one walking

I see another car pass, and I put my head against my window and close my eyes

I imagine a forest, with trees, animals, and leaves

I imagine a fox stalking a rabbit

I imagine a lumberjack cutting down a tree

I imagine dynamite blowing up a mountain top

I imagine condos, houses, factories consuming the forest

I open my eyes, and see another car pass

We pull to a stop, at a large black mountain of a house

We climb out of the car and walk up the wrought iron steps

He pulls out a set of keys and unlocks the thick oak door

We are home, we will sleep, and wake up, and continue to find a forest

We will find a forest and I will walk, and walk, and walk until I see a plane overhead
