The Beast

The Beast

A Story by RM Creswell
"

This was originally a piece I wrote for an English assignment. "Write about something real" was the instruction.

"

Her eyes pierced through me like shards of glass as she sat opposite, waiting. I refused to talk when she tried to engage me. My heart raced as another approached. The other gave me a questioning glance as she sat beside me. Three of us sat in an awkward silence, each too furious and hurt to say a word. One by one their names were called until I was sitting alone. Fear and hurt boiled up inside of me as I watched the second walk out in tears, I was desperate to go after her; tell her it was all okay. Before I was able to seize the chance my name was called. I jumped to my feet and walked into the room. A woman with a patronising smile that said 'I do care' beckoned me to sit down with a wave of her hand. As I sat down a something new was felt, a feeling I hadn't let in that day. The feeling seeped through me like flour through a sifter. It was as though someone had woken a sleeping dragon and the beast wasn't happy. I refocused my attention to the people in the office and braced myself for the onslaught. What was going on? What was my side of the story? Blah, blah, blah. I so wasn't ready to talk.

"Elli…" I barely heard what she said. The beast was fully awake now and hard to control. I stared down at my knees and gripped the sides of the chair as silence drifted through the room like a dark fog. I looked up as the door opened for a second time and she walked in. the atmosphere in the room had just become icy.

"I'm sorry –" she started.

"I don't want to be here" I whispered to my knees. I wasn't sure how long I could keep the beast in check.

"Nobody's forcing you to be here, Elli" the woman with the patronising smile said "But –"

I stood up and looked at her for the first time that day.

"You don't get to walk all over me then turn around and say sorry" I could feel the beast fighting to break lose. "You don't make the rules" I slammed the door on my way out, the beast was finally free. I walked out onto the oval, overheard mirrored my mood. The sky was turning a nasty black and the sound distant thunder could be heard. I sat on the grass as the rain began to fall and hugged my knees. The beast was finally gone and everything could go back to normal. But nothing would ever be the same again; it was just too hard to be normal again. I lay back in the wet grass and let the rain soak my tear stained face. In my mind's eye I could see a large neon sign flashing above me. 'Hurt & Confused' it said. It was hard not to be after everything that had happened. Just behind the sign I saw the beast fly off into the distance.
