Brothers of the roadA Poem by R.M.CThere’s
a huge hole filling my chest Now
that you’re gone, my friend, And I
keep expecting to see you around the next bend, And
every time I’m disappointed when I make it around, But at
least I know I’ll see you at the end.
I found
a kindred spirit in you And I
think you found one in me too, We rode
so well together I couldn’t believe, I’m now
a lone ranger now that you had to leave.
Every
cherished memory brings a smile to my face, Whether
it’s your rapid pace Or some
random insignificant place We once
rode through as brothers.
We rode
our rides and lives like lovers, Hitting
the gas to hear them sigh, Riding
through valleys so low and mountains so high, Then
your retirement from this race was neigh But I
know you will race up high above, In the
Grand Prix of life, Your
engine’s every roar a purr of love.
When I
ride alone some nights, I look
up at the starlit sky, Imagining
two of them were your head lights, Such a
beautiful thought it almost makes me cry.
I punch
the clutch and hit the gas, Hurrying
to reach you Through
these small dark roads, And
though my tears obscure my vision I
somehow make it through.
I hit
the brakes and spin to a stop, Look up
at the sky and swear I see you smile, I know
it was you who guided my hand on the wheel, Whispering
it’s not time for us to reunite... At
least for a little while.
I’m
still alone but I swear you’re with me, Sitting
in the passenger seat to go for a ride, I put
it into gear and away we go into the night, For
once I unashamedly willingly cried. © 2016 R.M.CAuthor's Note
