The Sunrise That Never CameA Poem by RA FernandezAfter a personal loss, let this be the snapshot of the grief I'm feeling. He gazed to the horizon to see the sunrise The usual time of day when it always did. When seconds, then minutes, passed and all that lies Is the night sky, resembling the light of day that the dusk hid. He sat and pondered as to why the sun won't come As minutes became hours and the sky was still in the state of night, And after enough time, the man realized the night had become Permanent and the daytime sky had hastily taken its flight. He lay in the grass, cold from the lack of sunlight Caressed by the frigid solitude of his lonely existence, And on the sixteenth hour of his dark endless night He perished in the grassy fields, alone, with no resistance. The corpse lay bare, frost gathered on the grass on the cliffside Where the man once full of life watched the sunrise each day. He hoped the sun, even one last time, would grant him warmth on the inside, But isolation rose in its place, spiriting him away.
