The Labyrinth: The Hall of Speculum

The Labyrinth: The Hall of Speculum

A Poem by Sirajudin Matin

My only light fell from the sky—

Like fire in a demon’s eye.

The ground gave way beneath my feet,

An abyss unveiled without deceit.

A piercing howl finely reared,

As swiftly as momentum veered.

And just as quick as it’s embark,

The light peered through infinite dark.

And just as vicious as the plunge

The ground felt like a hounding lunge.

When, at last my eyes did eat,

He set himself in my retreat.

And when I found I could not scamper,

Fear set in, my limbs did damper.

Yet swathed in white, he slowly crept—

Behind his eyes a question slept.

And silently his mask did sing

The inquiry my ears would bring.

Without haste the last note battered,

And on that mark his mask had shattered.

Revealed to me, he lacked a face,

But what glared back was my disgrace.

As what was said, his lyrics test,

The truth was this, which translates best.

As I am you and you are me,

Lost have we, the conscience that determines thee.
