Nightmare

Nightmare

A Story by Alice
"

This is a story about Rain's nightmare, parts of it are jagged and I'm not terribly apologetic about that. I like the way it is jarring as dreams are not linear.

"
Rain laid out in the hammock she had set up in her backyard. It was peaceful here as always. She wondered if things would ever change for her. Her eyes watched the sky as it shifted from the rosy red color that it was when the sun had long since disappeared beneath the horizon and turned to the deeper blue that no matter who tried, could barely be replicated. Her eyes closed for a moment, rocking idly.

Suddenly, the hammock flipped upside down. Instead of falling out of it, she simply was turned right side up again. She gasped and her eyes opened to look around wildly. She had no idea what had happened but things were different suddenly. She stood up slowly and looked around puzzled. The sky was bright again. She turned towards her house and found it gone. She looked around some more.

It was now in front of where she had been standing. She looked to the door and blinked slowly. This was not what she had been expecting. She moved towards the house, noticing how it looked brighter, almost cleaner from the outside. She frowned heavily then the backdoor opened. She froze in place as her eyes widened.

The young girl who came out of the house was bright eyed and looked to Rain with love in her eyes. Her hand moved up to her mouth, before she knelt down.

"Why are you crying, Mommy?" The little girl asked as she came up to Rain.

"I had a bad dream" Rain lied easily. She knew the truth though, this was her bad dream. She reached out and wrapped her arms around the young girl. She pulled her against herself. She refused to close her eyes as she held her daughter against her body. She was quiet as the silent sobs wracked her body. She stroked her long deep almost cherry wood colored hair.

"Mommy?" Her voice was softer now. Rain's eyes squeezed shut tightly as she fought not to let the next part of the dream happen. Rain thought long and hard about Kira and how she looked before she had been cruelly murdered. She ran her fingers along her back and picked her up slowly.

"I'm here, Kira" She carried the girl inside. "Let's go watch a movie" Rain fought to keep her voice even as she walked towards the house. How long would it be until she died? When was this in the girl's past? In her past? She had no idea. She fought not to sob again as she walked into the clean and lively looking house. She ran her fingers over her back again and set her down on the couch. The TV was positioned across from it.

"What would you like to watch?" Rain asked in as sweet of a voice as she could manage. She knew her dream would be coming to an end soon and the nightmare would begin. She ran her fingers over the spines of the DVD's. She continued to cry, her back to her daughter as she waited for the girl's answer.

"Mommy..." The girl spoke in a soft tone and her eyes watered more. "My throat hurts" Her voice was hoarse now. Rain leaned heavily against the DVD rack and started to sob openly. The girl no longer seemed to be aware of her cries. She shoved it over and turned to look at Kira though it was a moment she dreaded more than anything in life.

Kira was laying down now, the room had changed. It was now a mostly empty farm. There was a vampire standing beside the body of her daughter and her eyes looked to him. She had remembered him with intense hatred. She had killed him over and over again in her dreams.

The hot burns of silver on her wrists forced Rain to look down at her arms. She couldn't believe how much this moment in time continued to haunt her. She looked up to the young body on the floor that was now surrounded by a pool of blood. She screamed and cried, struggling against the chains that held her from picking the girl up.

She screamed louder, trying desperately to wake herself up. She pulled harder against the chains that held her. The dream suddenly shattered. She was left alone in an empty area that was dark. She swallowed heavily and collapsed as she started to sob again. She wanted so much to be awake and away from the dream that tormented her.

She laid her head on the non-existent floor and sobbed heavily. She couldn't save her daughter then and she never remembered the good days. She only remembered that one moment in time. She reached up to clench her hands in front of her chest; the stabbing pain that came with remembering this moment was almost unbearable.

She gasped as she was suddenly falling. She slammed against the ground of her backyard and found herself under the hammock. She laid there for a moment, panting heavily. She got up slowly and looked to the sky. She had no idea how long she had been asleep for. She laid back down in the hammock and ran her fingers along Pride. She closed her eyes as she felt the tears welling up in her eyes.

She began to sob, broken and defeated by her own nightmare.

Alice
Like I said, it's jagged because of it being a dream.
