So true it is that it can both scare and comfort. In its power and absoluteness, it can overtake you, destroy you. In its simplicity and perceivable emptiness, it is calming and reassuring.
I enjoy this, because I have thought similar things. I find this duality risen by staring into the blackness of night analogous to what may be felt when staring into the abyss of death. It can be either comforting or terrifying, depending on what ills or fortunes it might take from you.
