We were playing in the snow
Mother said we could Make sure you keep your stuff on. "Don't need you to freeze!" So we did We tossed snow here and there at each other Just about anywhere Our laughter rung in the whistling cold As I leaned forwards, smiling and out of breath, My hat and scarf fell off But it was fine I guessed Then I realized all this running and jumping and laughing and squealing It all made me hot What's one less jacket gonna hurt, I thought "You can't" Sister said. "Mother won't like it." I told her I didn't care She shook her head and we went on I was shaking with goosebumps now But I refused to put in back on Gear is for babies, I thought After a while, I forgot My gloves made it hard to throw snowballs, so I threw them aside Sister's admonishment she didn't try to hide This time she said nothing Immediately I felt the difference My fingers grew numb and pink My thoughts were blurred It grew hard to think We'd built a fort, to protect us from each other in the snowball fight I sat behind mine Against the wall to rest My pants and boots were all that were left I grew tired and slow I needed to stop I closed my eyes and slid on the ground I should've put my stuff back on but I lacked the strength So I just lay there for a long length of time Soon thereafter I couldn't open my eyes or wiggle my toes I felt the frozen snot under my nose I fell face first and heard Sister yell "What are you doing over there?" My throat closed a while ago I let her question go She asked again And again I gave no reply Now I know why Mother shad said ti Then Everything was gone I could barely strain to hear her scream and cry Full of fear Then it went quiet and I saw the light I felt nothing and nothing of it But now, I know why Mother had said it
