Around The Block

Around The Block

A Poem by Bethany Woody
"

Just some thoughts....

"

I’ve been around the bock
A time or two in my life
Seen things
Said words
Hurt and cried
But it always comes back
To just a sad little girl
Hidden away behind
Blue eyes
That see too much
Hidden behind a smartass mouth
That gets me into more trouble
Then it ever got me out of
Hurled accusations
Swung fists
Kissed a man
I didn’t really want to know
A man who lied
Just to steal my innocence
Never realizing
It was long gone
By the way side
Of the road I traveled
Around this block
A time or two.
Maybe one day soon
I’ll find it again
In a far off place
I create in dreams
Written out on paper
Lined in tears
And sweat from the pain
Of traveling
Down a road
No one knows better
Then the ones
Walking with me
Those who bleed
Just to feel pain
To know they are alive
Not yet dead
In the ditch
On this corner
Of the block.

This is the kind of poetry I love: totally honest, free of unnecessary words, direct and filled with powerful rhythms.

I create in dreams......sums up life for a writer doesn't it.
I like how you take us along for the ride around your block.
This was heart breaking at times, but it did leave some hope
for a brighter day.

Thanks for sharing a wonderful write Beth.

What an emphasis on life and quality of life. You start of by showing that you've been around the block, then you show your empathy for all those who have been the same: 'those who bleed/just to feel pain/to know they are alive.' I adored the lines:

I didn't really want to know
A man who lied
Just to steal my innocence
Never realizing
It was long gone
By the way side
Of the road I traveled
Around this block
A time or two.

You really capture the idea of the corrupt, cheating, scheming man, but then you show what the pathos of your life has been already and what innocence you've already lost. It's such a powerful, emotive poem.

I have been around that block a few times myself... great self reflection as you come to terms with the past and realize you are human and you still have so much to give.
