Nation Of Hypocrisy

Nation Of Hypocrisy

A Poem by Bethany Woody
"

A small bit of my political POV

"

We are the nation of hypocrisy.

A nation that

speaks statistics

of global warming

while driving around

in oversized gas guzzling

v8 SUV’s, and drinking

our double decaf soy

mocha lattes from

Styrofoam cups.

We are the nation of hypocrisy.

A nation that promises

freedom and equality

to all men while

proposing a 10ft tall

fence along it’s

southern border

and puts those

who seek a better life

behind bars.

We are the nation of hypocrisy.

A nation that gives

equal rights to it’s women

while reducing

government spending

on women’s healthcare

and trying to ban abortion.

We are the nation of hypocrisy.

A nation that seeks

new, improved, better

medical technology but

refuses to see the

benefits of stem cell research.

We are the nation of hypocrisy.

A nation that touts

great leaders while

we have fumbling idiots,

adulterers and alcoholics

for presidents.

We are the nation of hypocrisy.

A nation that goes

to war to fight terrorism

while brother kills brother

over color.

Blood is blue in

ever vein and red

when it hit’s the air.

We are the nation of hypocrisy.

A nation that says

“No child left behind”

yet we send a 13 year old

to prison for selling drugs

to feed his brothers and sisters.

All because mommy and

daddy lost their jobs

to the illegal immigrant

who works almost for free.

We are the nation of hypocrisy.

A nation that releases

the schizophrenic onto

the streets and then

raises the cost of

prescription drugs

for the sake of the

almighty dollar.

So that in a delusional

state he kills

a three year old

thinking it’s the

boogie man come

to take him to hell.

Ladies and gentlemen,

stand up and applauded

this great nation, the nation

of hypocrisy, known as

the united states.

I note a vein of hypocrisy in the author as well.

Compare these two seemingly, no, actually contradictory points in your poem.

Pro illegal immigrant stance:

A nation that promises
freedom and equality
to all men while
proposing a 10ft tall
fence along its
southern border
and puts those
who seek a better life
behind bars.

Then an anti-immigrant stance:

A nation that says
No child left behind
yet we send a 13 year old
to prison for selling drugs
to feed his brothers and sisters.
All because mommy and
daddy lost their jobs
to the illegal immigrant
who works almost for free.

Also, at what age should one be held accountable under the law? Are you for the legalization of illicit drugs? Is it just ok if the kid needed food? That is why we have child welfare. If the kid is 13, he was not eligible for any job that an illegal alien would take. The minimum age to work is fourteen years old.

I like your poem as a poem, but not for the content.

Oh wow yes, now I am standing up and applauding you on a brilliant piece. I loved the ironic scenarios and sarcastic references to a world that seems to be making a difference, sadly only the things that they want to and the way they want to. They make the rules yet they follow through on it just the way it suits them.

Loved the flow of the piece just emphasized the irony even more specially with the repeating of the line "Nation of Hypocrisy".

Great writing, I loved this

You touch on a lot of issues here and good for you.
We def go by the sorry saying 'Do as we say, not as we do'
The 'No Child Left Behind' is a joke, the 'Drug War' a joke, and our leaders are
bumbling idiots who would sell their best friend out for enough money
and they are looking out for the better of all ,right.
Nice eyeopening write

You said a mouthful of truth! It's enough to make any real American puke him/herself silly! I too get depressed and angry when I look at the hypocritical state of our nation.
You do very well on soap boxes! I suggest reading LiLi, a poet here in the Cafe. She has stirring soap box pieces also.
Spoken in true American spirit! I salute you!

You raise some very valid and controversial points, which is exactly what I love about this. Anything that just cuts the bullshit and stright-up tells it like it is, that's my style. A wonderful, blunt, agressive, and brooding piece of writing.

Yes we are. And you stated that perfectly here. This was a joy to read to see another see the problems that I see with this country and being not afraid to express them. Very powerfully stated and a true joy to witness. I will stop before i go off on a rant.

Great Job!!!
