The Child

The Child

A Poem by Bethany Woody

Beautiful child

with an angelic face

beautiful child

full of grace.

Innocent angel

sees no reasons

innocent angel

sees no seasons.

Scared child

hides the bruise

scared child

doesn't know it's abuse.

Lonely little one

doesn''t know why

lonely little one

gives a silent cry.

Lost child

didn't know how to fight

lost child

taken in the night.

Rescued soul

was not even seven

rescued soul

was taken to heaven.

Sweet baby

in loving arms

sweet baby

safe from harms.

Author's Note

Bethany Woody
There was more to this before it was lost, some backround info on news stories that inspired the write, as well as some statistics on child abuse in the US. I'm sorry they are no longer included with the piece as they really added that extra something to the words you see here.

Tremendous piece to highlight the plight of innocence abused; some are rescued , some are lost. This should also be posted to your local paper, as its core-meaning needs a wider audience. The message is universal.

Brilliant write!

Very sad and inspirational piece. I think you captured the lonely feeling neglected children must feel. However, I will say this. And please take this with a grain of salt because I don't have kids. I agree that if you suspect child abuse, you should contact someone immediately. However, if you are wrong, that cloud of suspicion hangs over those parents for a long time and can ruin them both emotionally and socially. This is not condoning allowing the abuse to continue. I'm just saying that an accusal of that stature needs to be more inspected than suspected, if that makes sense. Anyway. I still think your piece here has a ton of power to it and I'm glad you posted this.

OKay damn where were you hiding this kind of power. This is an amazing writing as well as very thought provoking. You choose a topic that is clearly close to your heart. I just heard about a local woman here that killed her 2 younger children and her husband then turned the gun on herself. What is going on with people now a days.

Great Job!!!

Oh, my God. This was so profound to me. It was so emotionally wrenching for me, not only because I was physically and emotionally abused, but because I feel so passionately for children. The statistics were staggering and shocking and added a jolt to your already terrifyingly real and beautiful poem. I will never be able to understand people who can hurt or neglect little children. They are so innocent and loving and trusting. I just want to go home and cry now. I hope this touches many others as it has touched me.
